LEST WE FORGET: First Responders Still Paying The Price

On January 1, 2020 the New York State Police (NYSP) announced the line of duty death of Investigator Ryan Fortini. Inv. Fortini passed away from an illness stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11. 2001. Following the events of 9/11, Invt. Fortini was assigned to New York City to aid in the search and recovery efforts. Invt. Fortini entered service with the NYSP on November 2, 1998 and served with the NYSP for 16 years. He was forced into retirement in 2015 due to his illness.

I lost my old partner, Senior Inv. Tom Moran, in 2012 as a result of a cancer he developed following prolonged exposure to a toxic environment while assisting with search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site in NYC after the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.

Lest we forget those who perished on 9/11 and those first responders that continue to pass away and/or have health issues. To those in the AML field: AML is not now, nor ever has been, “just paperwork”. There are real events that occur before and after KYC, Transaction Monitoring, and SAR reporting. Please consider the “hero’s” when someone questions the value of your essential and critical work. This is Why AML Matters!
